In a nation in distress due to the difficult economy, budget cuts are bound to happen. The Stanford Band's 2009 Budget Cuts field show revealed some of the hardships encountered by the university to deal cope with financial setbacks.
At the beginning of the pregame field show for the Stanford vs. San Jose State football game, a drummer that responds to the name Big Dickosaurus (Big D for short) approached me, the Stanford Tree, and offered to buy the Tree costume. Dying to get my hands on that new GPS TomTom with Snoop Dog's voice, I reluctantly gave into the moment of weakness, selling the costume for a low price.
It was the beginning the Stanford Band's chart of the song, "Hard to Handle" by the Black Crowes, that I handed off the costume to reveal the Green Man costume within. In front of a crowd of over 20,000 (preseason exhibition game), I heard the masses cheering for me through spandex for the first time dancing the Dance of Green Man for the 7-minute show.
In times of distress, the Green Man is a portal in which people can channel their emotion into an effective form of protest and expression. Although in that pregame show I was unable to seduce the audience into an added state of intoxication unable to obtain from an ordinary tailgate, Green Man was there for them as usual.
